How do you structure a podcast interview?

A podcast interview works best in four movements: a short introduction that tells the listener why this person, an opening question that is easy to answer, a middle built from three or four areas rather than a fixed script, and a close that lands on one clear takeaway. The structure should be loose enough that a good tangent is allowed to happen.

Structure is not the same as a script. A script produces an interrogation. What you want is a shape you can return to after wandering.

The opening question should be easy. People need a minute to find their voice, and starting with your hardest question wastes the answer.

The middle is where a list of areas beats a list of questions. If the guest says something more interesting than your next question, the list lets you follow it and still know what you have not covered.

The close is the part most shows waste. "Where can people find you" is not a takeaway. Asking what they would tell someone starting out, or what they have changed their mind about, gives you the clip.
