What is podcast outreach?

Podcast outreach is the process of contacting people to arrange podcast appearances, running in two directions: hosts approaching potential guests, and guests or their representatives pitching themselves to shows. It covers finding the right people, sending the initial approach, following up, and tracking where each conversation has reached.

Both directions are the same job. Identify the right person, make a specific approach, follow up once, and keep track of what state every conversation is in.

Outreach is usually described as a writing problem, which is why so much advice is about templates. In practice it fails at the tracking. A template can be fixed in an afternoon. Forty half-finished conversations across an inbox, a DM folder, and a spreadsheet cannot.

The measurable difference between people who book consistently and people who do not is rarely the quality of the first message. It is whether the second one gets sent.

Volume also works against you. A hundred generic messages produce fewer bookings than fifteen specific ones, and they cost reputation on the way.

People also ask

What is podcast guesting?
Appearing as a guest on other people’s podcasts, usually to reach their audience. It is podcast outreach run from the guest side.
How do you track podcast outreach?
By state rather than by message: contacted, replied, scheduled, recorded, published. Whatever holds that has to be somewhere other than an inbox, because an inbox has no concept of "waiting on them since Tuesday".
How many podcasts should I pitch?
Fewer, more specifically. Fifteen well-chosen shows with a real reason for each beat a hundred generic pitches, and they do not burn the list.
