The Top of My Screen Was Doing Nothing for Me

I opened PodGlue one morning this week and just looked at it. Not as the guy who built it. As the guy who has to use it.

The top right corner had five things in it. A theme switch. A notification bell. A button that said FEEDBACK. A badge that said FOUNDING MEMBER. My name, and under it, in small caps, AGENCY OWNER.

None of those five things are the work.

That last one bothered me most. AGENCY OWNER was not pulled from my account. It was typed into the code. Every single person who logs into PodGlue sees AGENCY OWNER under their name, whether they run an agency or record alone in a closet.

It looked like the app knew something about you. It didn't. It was a costume.

So it's gone.

Feedback and Founding Member are still there, they just live inside the menu behind your initials now, next to Settings and Log out. I press Feedback maybe once a week. It does not need to sit at eye level all day, dressed up like a button that matters.

Underneath that, on the Home screen, sat four boxes: Needs Action, Ready, Fresh Activity, Stale. Each one was a tall block with a big number and a line of small text under it explaining what the number meant.

Here's what mine said that morning. Fresh Activity: 3. Stale: 707.

Seven hundred and seven episodes with no movement in a week. That is the number I need in my face. That is the entire reason I open the app.

And it was sharing space with a badge telling me I signed up early.

The four boxes are now one compact row. Icon, number, label. The explanation moved into the tooltip, so hover over Stale and you still get "No movement in 7+ days." Nothing was deleted. It just stopped shouting. The list of what actually needs attention moved up the screen, which is where my eyes were going anyway.

One more thing, since I'm being honest about what I find.

While I was in there I clicked the Founding Member badge to check the popup still worked. It opened trapped inside that thin bar at the top of the screen, squeezed into 64 pixels. It had been doing that quietly for who knows how long. Nobody reported it, because nobody clicks a badge about themselves twice.

That is usually how it goes. You go in to move a button, and you find something that has been broken in the dark.

I keep coming back to the same test with PodGlue. When you open it, does it show you your work, or does it show you the app?

Seven hundred and seven episodes were waiting for me. The app was showing me a badge.

Fixed that.
