Edit Your Video by Editing the Transcript

Most podcasters record in one tool, clean it up in a second, and upload it to a third. The cleanup is where episodes stall.

What was wrong

I kept leaving PodGlue to fix a recording. Record, open another editor, export, come back, upload again. Every round trip was another place to lose the file or the afternoon.

The one-click cleanup tools don't know what they're cutting. When I cut the trailer for my 99 Names series, it was clear a one-click filler remover would have cut into "Ar-Rahman." It sees a word it doesn't recognize. I see a Name I'm trying to say with care.

The gentlest pause setting still took too much. On that scripted trailer, another editor's lightest setting removed 45 seconds. I undid it. A pause in a recitation isn't dead air.

What shipped

The Edit tab. PodGlue lines every word of your transcript up with your video. Delete words, and the video is cut. Click a struck word to bring it back.

Hearing the edit takes no render. Playback skips the cuts, and you can flip between the edited and original versions.

PodGlue also suggests the cuts a podcaster usually makes, and you review them first: filler words and stutters, repeated takes, lines you misread if you paste your script, and long pauses. For pauses you pick Reflective, Conversational or Tight. Reflective is the default, because it's the kindest.

Arabic, the Names of Allah, and anything you mark as protected are never part of a suggestion. If you cut through one yourself, PodGlue asks first.

When you're happy, render the edit, then apply it. Your episode's video, feed audio and transcript are replaced with the edited version. The original is kept, and Revert puts everything back.

A concrete example

I ran it on Ar-Rahman, the first episode of my series. It's 7 minutes 53 seconds.

PodGlue found 3 repeated takes and 72 long pauses. I took all of them. The episode came down to 6 minutes 55 seconds, 58 seconds shorter, and the render took about two and a half minutes.

Then I hit Revert. The video, the audio and the transcript came back exactly as they were, and my 75 cuts stayed saved in case I wanted them again.

Applying an edit clears the episode's AI clip suggestions, since their timestamps point at the old video. Run Forge and Social again afterwards, and your chapters and descriptions are written for the version you're actually publishing.

What's next

Right now the editor takes recordings up to 25 minutes, and a long one takes a while to render. I want a 40-minute episode to render in a couple of minutes, so I'm going to split the render across several workers.

I'd also like to publish the finished video to YouTube without leaving PodGlue. Today you download it and upload it yourself, which is a step too many.

The Transcript Editor is included on Amplify and above. If you try it and a suggestion looks wrong, tell me.
